There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is not legal. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of most border crossings.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel complex that highlights many conveniences aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 tables.
